Lift well and lift lobby pressurization are strategies used in building design. They enhance safety and comfort, particularly in high-rise buildings.

Lift well pressurization involves maintaining a slightly higher air pressure within the lift shaft or well.
This pressure is higher compared to the surrounding areas. This is typically achieved by introducing conditioned air into the lift shaft.
Lift well pressurization prevents the infiltration of smoke, fumes, or other contaminants into the lift shaft.
By keeping the lift shaft under positive pressure, it becomes more difficult for smoke or fire gases to enter. This allows the lift to stay usable for evacuation purposes.

Lift lobby pressurization involves maintaining a positive pressure within the lobby area outside the lift doors on each floor.
This is usually achieved by introducing conditioned air into the lobby space.
It aims to prevent smoke and toxic gases from entering the lobby area during a fire. This applies to other emergencies as well.
Maintaining positive pressure in the lobby prevents smoke and gases from infiltrating. They are less likely to come in from adjacent spaces, like the stairwell or corridor.
